My Story…

A letter of Hope and Compassion to Dr. Deepak Chopra

One of the most dedicated women I know has recently contacted you regarding a sought position as a goodwill ambassador and professional volunteer. Elizabeth has an astounding level of energy and a heart to match its breadth. This combination is her greatest asset, in my opinion, and could only aid in furthering any cause to which she attaches herself. My interactions with Elizabeth only further this belief.

Elizabeth and I began attending the Aveda Institute Denver in January 2006. Immediately, I knew she was the embodiment of passion. She related her tale of overcoming a terminal cancer diagnosis via intense focus mentally, spiritually and physically. The love she had for her children was evident and explained so much of her drive to succeed, with love as her fuel. She changed her entire life path in order to continue to travel upon it. She was completely giving of herself for the sole purpose of inspiring hope and naught to do with vanity. The room was quiet for quite a time as we were in awe of such exposure and honesty. Indeed, inspiration was aglow within that space. Her first touch, and it was electric.

I came to know Elizabeth through our constant crossing of paths as we both dedicated ourselves to keeping as best an order as possible in the chaotic space we loved and felt the need to care for. As older students (with personal struggles met and managed), we had experienced much that others had as of yet not. I could greatly appreciate her dedication for helping others stay sane, as I also strove to do the same. I found a ready smile every time we passed in the hall on our way to assist in some way. These passing smiles and brief conversations grew to a lovely friendship.

As life presents surprises to keep one on their toes, I was presented mine in the form of a cerebellar hemagioblastoma. Yes, it was a tumor after all. I feel I should have been more concerned, but I had friends who had come through so much and I felt more at ease in the knowing of their successes. Elizabeth was a prime example of inspiration for me. Later, I found out that as I was in surgery, she was in the waiting room for the sole purpose of bringing herself closer to a friend in need and just sending positive energy. No fanfare, no announcements...it was just her way. She gave of what she could, herself. It was a mighty fine gift. She exited as quietly as she arrived, having been there to aid a friend in the only way she felt she could.

My first day out and about after my brain surgery was to attend Elizabeth's graduation. I might not have been the most presentable, but it was not about me. This time, I wished to repay a friend in kind and be there for her. It was one of the loveliest moments I can recall. There was such relief we each felt for our respective situations and also felt for each other. It was quite a day for release and appreciation.

"Appreciation" is truly a word Elizabeth's entire being represents. What one receives from her, what one recognizes in her and what one observes her to have an immeasurable fount of is indeed a physical embodiment of this word. This is a force any body would be blessed beyond measure to have in their proximity. To have this be a part of an enterprise and movement involving goodwill would be benefited to an infinite nature, as she simply is goodwill.
